Samsung Oven Element Not Working? Troubleshoot and Fix It with These Easy Steps
A malfunctioning oven element puts a disappointing halt to your meal plans. Your Samsung oven is usually a trusty kitchen companion, but what happens when a heating element refuses to cooperate? Before calling in the professionals, try these troubleshooting solutions – you may be able to fix the issue yourself!
Isolate the problem
- Check the obvious:
- ensure the oven is plugged in securely.
- Verify there hasn’t been a power cut in your area.
- Double-check your oven’s settings – is it set to bake/broil mode?
- Narrow it down: Do both the bake (bottom) and broil (top) elements fail to heat up? This could signify a broader problem.
- Use your other senses: When you turn on the oven, do you hear the usual click/hum of the element attempting to engage? Do you see it start to glow red?
Inspect the Element
- Turn off the power: Before any inspection or repairs, always make sure the power supply to your oven is disconnected. A circuit breaker is the best bet for complete power isolation.
- Look for signs of damage: Carefully examine the bake and/or broil element. Do you spot blisters, breaks, or warping in the metal coil? These are signs the element has burned out and needs replacement.
- Check the connection points: Ensure the element is inserted fully and securely into its sockets. Loose connections prevent power transmission.
Test the Element with a Multimeter
- Continuity testing: A multimeter tests for an unbroken electrical path (continuity). A faulty element will not show continuity.
- How to test:
- Disconnect the element wires from the oven’s terminals.
- Set your multimeter to its resistance (ohms) setting.
- Touch the multimeter probes to the terminals on the heating element. A reading close to zero indicates continuity. An ‘OL’ or extremely high reading means the element is bad.
Replace the Faulty Element
- Find the right part: Use your Samsung oven’s model number to find the correct replacement element. You can source these from appliance part retailers or directly from Samsung.
- Disconnect and remove: Turn off the power. Carefully disconnect the wires from the faulty element and take note of how they attach. Remove any screws holding the element and gently pull it out.
- Install the new element: Reverse the process – attach the new element, reattach the wires paying attention to their original configuration, and reinsert any screws.
- Test it out: Restore power and turn on your oven. The new element should glow brightly.
