Switch off and unplug the washing machine.
Before you do anything else, the first step in dealing with a blocked washing machine drain pump is to switch off and unplug it from the mains. This will ensure that no electricity runs through the machine while you are working on it, preventing electric shock or further damage to the machine.
Remove the drain pipe, if necessary (depending on model).
Often, washing machines are designed such that their drain pump will be accessible from the front of the machine. If yours is blocked and you aren’t able to easily find it, however, you may need to remove the drain pipe. This is done by unscrewing the plastic clip at the end of the hose and gently pulling it away from its position. Take care not to damage anything else in your washing machine as you do this.
Check for any blockages in the pump itself or around it.
Once you have access to the pump, check for build-up of lint and other debris in or around it. If any is found, gently clear it away using a brush or vacuum cleaner. You should also ensure that there are no blockages in the drain hose itself – if necessary, unhook it from its position and inspect inside for any foreign objects. Make sure all of the hoses are securely fastened before completing the job.
Clean out any residue
Once the blockage has been removed, clean any residue from both the pump housing and the drain pipes with a damp cloth. When finished, check that the hoses are securely connected to the washing machine’s outlet pipe or filter and then reattach them following your manufacturer’s instructions. After you have done this, your washing machine should be back up and running again!
