Stove problems and solutions
Are you trying to use your stove and can't get it to heat up? You could be dealing with a number of potential issues that could prevent or limit your stove from heating. This post will help you troubleshoot why won't my stove heat up and provide tips on how to fix the problem.
If your stove won’t heat up, the first thing you should do is check the gas flow. Make sure your gas valve is in the “on” position and that there aren’t any blockages or leaks that could be preventing it from functioning properly. If there are any leaks, you will need to have a professional check for potential blockages and repair them before moving forward.

If the gas valve is open, then you should move on to checking if the burner is lit. This can easily be determined by looking for a green light or flame in the middle of each burner, called a pilot light. If the light is off, it could mean that there’s an issue with your regulator or thermocouple and you may need to replace them. On some models, tapping the tip of your index finger lightly against the knob quickly may reset the pilot light if it has gone out suddenly.
If you do not see a pilot light or burner flame under the burners, try turning on one of the knobs and inspect the igniter. If you have an electric range, check that there’s power going to the outlet and test it using another small appliance such as a hair dryer. If your model has a flat top with no visible pilot light, it may have an ignition component instead and you should inspect for sparks when a knob is turned to “on”.
If your stove is set to a low temperature mode or a flame control setting, it may limit the amount of heat coming out. Check if you are using the right cooktop mode to allow for a normal level of heat. This usually depends on what type and size of cookware you are using on the burner. Make sure that the pan is not too large or too small for overheating or under-heating to occur as this can also cause problems with heating up your stove.
If you are having problems with an electric stove not heating up, you need to check that the electrical connections at the back of the stove are connected properly. Unplug the stove and carefully inspect any wiring, cords and plugs coming from the wall to make sure they’re working correctly. Make sure that nothing is loose or damaged, as this could be an easy fix if it’s just a matter of reconnecting something properly.
